Can the Nollywood story be told without a mention of Richard Mofe-Damijo aka RMD? That would most surely be an unforgivable omission!
RMD is pretty much the arch Nollywood icon – Famous, Good looking, Very Relevant.
It is this, that makes him such an icon, the reason he is the focus of this article.
His Early Years
Richard was born in Delta, Nigeria where his keenness to venture into Arts must have started. By the time he attended, High School, his vision for what he would become had begun to take shape. He joined the Drama Club there, where he must have picked up some acting skills.
Being pretty sure of how he would like his life trajectory sketched, he enrolled to study ‘Theatre Arts’ at the University of Benin, at a time where such a step was not as common and sometimes even stigmatized.
Such doggedness to be an actor began to bear its fruits when in 1996, he featured in his first film, ‘Out of Bounds’.
RMD’s Acting Career
Richard Mofe-Damijo’s acting career began in 1997 with the release of ‘Out of Bounds’ a film which he also wrote and produced. On this project he collaborated closely with the veteran Director, Tade Ogidan.
‘Out of Bounds’ proved to be key to the start of an amazing career for it won three awards and a number of nominations.
It also paved the way for more collaborations with Tade Ogidan which would see him play major acting roles in Hostages, Diamond Ring and Scores to Settle – some of the biggest and most popular Nollywood movies of their time.
Since then, with a career spanning 24 years and counting, RMD has starred in a bulk of movies with some of his most recent appearances in 10 Days In SunCity, The Wedding Party and The Wedding Party 2 – the current highest grossing Nollywood movie of all time.
He also plays a major role in the February Ghollywood release, ‘The Perfect Picture: 10 Years Later‘ hitting the big screen in Nigeria on February 7, 2020
